Count Us In’ festival has kicked off across Newcastle with 30 events and activities celebrating disability inclusion and accessibility.

The festival, held from March 4 to 31, has been delivered in partnership with local businesses and community groups to help break down barriers and increase social inclusion.

Some events across the month-long festival include immersive art, dance, and activations focused on education and awareness, exploring issues like discrimination in the workplace.

Community Disability Alliance Hunter (CDAH) is also involved in the festivities with a Stand Up Speak Up community mural event which was held from March 13 and 14 at 194 Maitland Road Islington.

CDAH Executive Director Andrew Vodic said the mural’s purpose was to empower community members living with a disability and create community conversation.

“The mural symbolises our experiences as people living with a disability in our community promoting inclusion,” Mr Vodic said.

The festival program also includes Goal Ball day hosted by former Australian Paralympians.

Newcastle Councillor Matthew Byrne, Chair of City of Newcastle’s Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee, said all the events and activities were designed for everyone to enjoy.

“The broader community is encouraged to join in the festival, as inclusion is everyone’s business and the entire community benefits when we celebrate all our abilities,” Cr Byrne said.

“Thank you to all our partners and members of the community who were part of the previous program, and we look forward to delivering another exciting festival program throughout the entire month of March.”
