The Girls Will Be Girls music festival held at The Rogue Scholar on May 29 not only provided an exciting new platform for female artists but raised funds for Got Your Back Sista, a charity offering benevolent relief and support to women and children escaping domestic violence.

Laura-Louanne Morgan ‘Louannella’ with Got Your Back Sista founder Melissa Histon and Vexel Creations
artistic director Monique Humphreys.

Organised in collaboration with Vexel Creations and Louannella, the night showcased local and genre-diverse performances.

Vexel Creations artistic director Monique Humphreys said they had become enraged, awakened and inspired after attending Newcastle’s March4Justice.

“Laura and I came together after being at the march and found ourselves asking ‘okay, what’s next?’” Humphreys said.

“How can we actively contribute to the change we wish to see?”

Laura-Louanne Morgan ‘Louannella’ said they both decided to try to enact change through their shared passions.

“In a mutual passion for women’s rights and live music, we decided there’s no better way than to hold a festival highlighting exactly that!” Morgan said.

The organisers emphasised that the event was a safe, encouraging and positive space for anyone over 18 to attend.
