The World Surf League (WSL)’s Newcastle Cup kicked off on Thursday, April 1, with the City of Newcastle providing a ‘live site’ at The Station for the community to watch the competition.
Over the past couple of weeks, Novocastrians have seen 52 professional surfers from around the world arrive for the second Championship Tour event of the 2021 season, the Rip Curl Newcastle Cup.
With thousands of spectators expected to gather at Merewether Beach, the council has provided a place for those who can’t get beachside to watch the action.
The Newcastle Cup hub is hosted at The Station with a big screen projection of the competition as well as food trucks and live entertainment, creating a festival vibe.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the hub was a family-friendly way for the community to enjoy the Championship Tour event.
“The anticipation for WSL’s Newcastle Cup is building with vision of superstars like Carissa Moore, Gabriel Medina and Italo Ferreria sampling the swell off Merewether and Dixon Park beaches last week being shared all over social media,” Cr Nelmes said.
“City of Newcastle’s live site will be the place to catch the action for anyone who missed out on tickets or simply looking for a fun, family-friendly atmosphere to watch the surfing while having a drink and a bite to eat.
“Already, the event is proving to be a major economic driver with our city’s hotels bursting over the next two-week period, some at 100% occupancy, accommodating the influx of WSL competitors, media representatives, event officials and fans.
She said she looked forward to welcoming the athletes and surfing fans to the Newcastle area and encouraged the locals to join in on the excitement by visiting the Newcastle Cup at the Station.
